During the Gallipoli campaign, W beach soon became the main base depot for the troops in the Helles sector, although it was by no means a safe place. From the Asian coast, vaguely visible through the mist, the beach with all its supplies stores was continuously shelled by 'Asiatic Annie'. Today the remains of the different piers to unload supplies and bring troops ashore, can still be seen.
