In the Helles sector, the south-western coastline entirely consists of cliffs. As the English appreciated the cover it offered from Turkish shellfire, the construction of a series of terraces was begun in autumn. The solid dugouts were mainly meant as winter accomodation for officers, which was the reason the troops soon started talking about 'Officers' Walk'. Nothing much of it is left now. |
